OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is a collaborative mapping project with all the data contributed by users. So rather like Wikipedia but less political. The data can be used freely by other projects as long as its license is followed which requires that credit is given and that any downstream updates to the map are also made freely available. Lots of mapping systems now offer OpenStreetMap as an option (like myForest) or even their main maps (like Organic Maps).

Since you can submit edits and additions to OpenStreetMap, this means you could make improvements which are particularly relevant to your woodland and its neighbourhood. These will then become visible in these other systems – it might take anything from minutes to months for them to appear though depending how often that system fetches updates. However, there are restrictions on what can be submitted and you should not submit temporary features like forestry compartments. Nevertheless, you can add fixed features which are visible on the ground like roadways, walls, ditches and these might also be the boundaries of your compartments. You should also think whether you want to add features, for privacy reasons.
